Onward to Transformation: Yass Soldiers Club's refurbishment takes off

MB

Paying homage to the valour and dedication of Australia's service men and women is a profound duty—an act that transcends time and bridges the gap between generations. In a world that sometimes rushes past history, sanctuaries that stand as guardians of memory are essential. The Yass Soldiers Club is one such guardian—a place where the legacy of those who have served is celebrated, where the memories of their sacrifices are honoured and community can meet in reflection and celebration.

A project to see the much-loved Yass Soldiers Club, located in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales, transformed commenced in 2017 to offer its members and guests an even better experience. The renovations planned include an optimised sporting atmosphere, premium beverage spaces, new social areas, and a new dining outlet all with the intention of honouring the past while ensuring the community’s needs are met in the future.

A Challenging Start for the Club’s Makeover

Even though the plans to rejuvenate the club began in 2017, it is only recently that things have started rolling. The delay was due to a number of challenges that the club faced in the early stages of the refurbishment project, mainly around getting the green light from all stakeholders including ticking off all the necessary regulatory requirements. That’s when the club decided it would benefit from the expertise of external project management.

Navigating through Complexities

Enter Peter Mitchell, Brian Cummins Group’s Head of Operations, Design, and Projects - a seasoned expert in the realm of project management. Peter's involvement in the project came into play in early 2022, when the club was grappling with hurdles that had delayed progress for years:

I was introduced to the team at Yass Soldier’s Club having been recommended because of my experience in doing work in statutory compliance. The club had a number of issues around approvals, compliance, and various statutory requirements”.

As the head of the Cummins Design and Development Services (C2DS), a proud member of the Brian Cummins Group of Companies, Peter and his team have used their expertise to steer the project through obstacles. With Peter’s extensive background in managing projects and ensuring compliance with regulations, he has been able to carefully examine issues and bring together the right experts for each challenge. This team has included fire, electrical, mechanical, and refrigeration engineers, as well as plumbing specialists, all working together under his guidance to move the project forward.

Turning the Corner Towards a New Chapter

Despite the many hurdles the club faced, the refurbishment project has finally received the approvals required to proceed to the makeover’s next stage:

“Over the past year, we've been helping Yass Soldiers Club get through what's been a difficult approval process to get the construction certificate to start work. I’m pleased to report that has been issued! While there were a number of issues we had to deal with -  we collaboratively dealt with them all, culminating in  the construction certificate finally being issued to enable the process of refurbishment and construction to get underway .”

As the club’s vision inches closer to reality, and the only dust to settle will be from construction, Yass Soldiers Club is all set to start a new chapter in their transformative journey and its Chief Executive Officer, Robert Packwood, couldn’t be happier as the construction stage of the refreshed premises begin:

A lot of work from everyone in getting to where we are, but a particular thanks to Peter Mitchell and the team at Brian Cummins Group. Your efforts in securing a Construction Certificate for the Clubs upcoming renovation, against all the odds, was a triumph. I know we had our challenges during this process, but we got there thanks to you and your team’s commitment, hard work, optimism, and resilience Your experience has proven to be invaluable, not only have you saved the project thousands of dollars, this was done without compromising the integrity of the design, or quality of the finished product. You showed us that this was more than a commercial build and as we progress forward, it is now very much a passion project.

It has been a pleasure working with you throughout this process. Look forward to working with you during the construction stage!”
